Fred Yates     <<back to artists

Fred Yates was born in 1922 and grew up in Urmston, a suburb of Manchester. He was a clerk in an insurance company until the outbreak of the 2nd World War when he served in the Grenadier Guards until 1945. He then returned to Manchester.

Fred began to paint pictures and enrolled on a teachers' training course at the Bournemouth College of Art.

In 1950 he won a scholarship to Rome and Florence, and in 1969 gave up teaching and moved down to Cornwall where he put all his time and energy into painting. However he never forgot his upbringing in Manchester and some of his paintings reflect this city.

He is now painting in France where he now lives and his paintings can be found in many private and public collections e.g. The Brighton and Hove Gallery, the University of Warwick, The Torquay Art Gallery, the Russell Coates Gallery in Bournemouth, and Liverpool University.
